Faculty Spotlight Week 7

Mariana Davidescu Fefer, Lead CDO Teacher

How would you describe your job here?

My main role is to make our children feel that BYDS is a place to have fun, learn, but above all to feel loved in a Jewish environment.

Did anything or anyone inspire you to become a teacher?

I was definitely born to be a teacher, I always played to have a classroom, but I didn’t realize my passion until I started working in a school, at that point I understood that that’s what I had to study.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Dare to do whatever makes you happy!

What superhero talent would you most like to have?

Jayna’s super power (of the Justice League), she is one of the fantastic twins, her power is to become the animal she wants!

How do you spend your summer breaks?

We always go to the beach, we also like to travel to new places, we always visit friends in Dallas since my daughter is attending a Venezuelan summer camp in Valley View, TX

Sydnee Hawkins, Lead THREEs Teacher

What is your favorite thing about BYDS?

My favorite thing about BYDS is the close-knit community, it feels like family. It is home away from home.

What are your hobbies/interests (other than making BYDS great)?

My favorite hobby is watching tv. I love watching tv. I love reality tv, some of my favorite shows consist of the Real Housewives franchise, Chrisley Knows Best, House Hunters

What are some traditions or superstitions you have for the First Day of School?

I don’t have a first day of school traditions or superstitions, but I was always excited to come to school with my new backpack and school supplies. Something about opening a new pack of pencils brought me so much joy.

What is your favorite food?

My favorite food is burgers. I love a good juicy burger. I can never go wrong with a burger. 

Lisa Nates, Assistant TWOs Teacher

How would you describe your job?

My job is to teach little people how to be Mensches, have strong social emotional skills ( schmoozing), and a  love of learning. I have been working at BYDS for 15 years.

What are you most proud of this year about your work at BYDS?

This year has brought about a million challenges.  I am proud of the fact that despite all our COVID-19 restrictions (masks), I am still able to connect and have a relationship with each of my little people in our classroom. 

What are you “free” reading right now?

Truthfully, I have not been reading much this year. I do however, spend time looking at a thousand recipes, that I never cook. 🙃

What is your favorite meal? (to eat, that is, not cook)

My favorite meal at the moment, a Greek salad, mit a side of Ribeye and potato chips.

How old were you when you decided to become a teacher?

16 years old

Where would you travel to for one month?

All throughout Asia 

How do you think students will remember you and your class?

Students would say “She is strict, but fair.” Also, “You can’t say I can’t do this, but I can’t do this YET!” Students will remember how important it is to keep the classroom organized.

Are you willing to share your favorite recipe to cook?

Only if someone wants gluten-free, vegetarian recipes
