Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose BYDS?

We love this question so much we created a page dedicated to answering it. Read more here.

When should I come for a tour and interview?

The admissions committee meets on a rolling basis and considers an applicant once the appropriate documentation, fees, and evaluation are complete.

Where is the Admissions Office located?

Please enter Gate 1 off of Frankway Drive and park in the parking lot. You will need to stop at the guard booth and give the officer your name. Park in our lot and enter the school building to the left of the circle drive and check in at reception. You will need a valid driver’s license to receive a visitor’s security badge.

Can prospective students spend a day at the school?

Yes. We invite prospective students to spend the day with us and their peers and be screened to determine his/her Day School readiness. If you have not, please fill out our inquiry form to tour our campus.

Is after school care available?

Yes. BYDS recognizes that school life includes more than classroom instruction. We seek to provide every opportunity for students to continue to develop confidence, challenge their creativity, and discover their Jewish identities. Visit the before and after school on our website.

Does BYDS require any testing for new students?

Yes. Elementary school (K-5th) applicants schedule their entrance testing through Education Specialists, LLC. 713-461-7996. Early Childhood applicants do not participate in a visitation day or evaluation but are invited to visit with their parents. Check out our How to Apply page for details.

How do I afford the tuition at a private school?

BYDS recognizes the need and importance of being able to provide a rich Jewish life and an excellent private school education for all Jewish families in Houston. The BYDS Board of Trustees, Administration, and generous sponsors are dedicated to making this possible for all families. We have announced a transformative tuition schedule. Try to plan ahead as much as possible so that you can keep the cost within reach. A common option is a monthly payment plan. This plan allows families to spread out their tuition payments over 8-10 months. Remember we are here to help you navigate the process.

Why should I choose a private school for my child?

Each private school was founded by an individual or group with a clear and distinct approach to education—a mission. As a result, you can choose the school whose mission matches your child’s needs. Small class sizes, individualized attention, values, manners, and discipline are the most important factors describing differences between public and independent schools.

How do I decide which school is the right choice for my child?

As a parent, you know that all children are not alike. Each child has his or her own special talents, interests, developmental patterns, and emotional needs. A school that is right for one may not be the best choice for another. When you are visiting schools, ask yourself questions such as these:

  • Is the curriculum appropriate for my child’s talents and goals?
  • Will the school challenge without overwhelming?
  • Will my child be comfortable in the school’s environment? Will I?
  • Are there opportunities for my child to pursue special interests?
  • Will my child learn the values that are important to our family?
