Please join us in welcoming our two newest hires: BYDS Elementary Art Teacher and Elementary Spanish Teacher. We are so excited to introduce Ms. Heather and Senorita Mariana to our community.
Kelly Heather, Elementary Art Teacher (Ms. Heather)
Kelly Heather grew up with a paint brush in one hand and a hammer in the other. She has been making arts and crafts and building things most of her life. After graduating from Sam Houston State University with a degree in Studio Art and a minor in Art History, she continued in the art field by working at a bronze foundry. After a few years working on bronze sculptures and monuments, she moved to Houston and became an art teacher. She spent the last nine years teaching art at a local studio for kids and, for the past year, at the Glassell Junior School. When not teaching or making art herself, Ms. Heather loves taking road trips and camping. In the last three years she has visited 30 national park sites between Texas and Washington. She also loves to be creative in the kitchen, concocting her own recipes and desserts. Ms. Heather strives to help kids realize that art is all around them, to explain the history of how and why art is made, and to create a space where they can express endless creativity. She is looking forward to teaching this year at BYDS and getting to meet new families.
Mariana Rivero Sutil, Elementary Spanish Teacher (Señorita Mariana – pronounced Mary-Anna)
Mariana Rivero Sutil was born and raised in Venezuela and has lived in the United States for 10 years. She recently relocated to Houston from Arkansas to be closer to family. After graduating with a Journalism degree from The University of Arkansas, she obtained a master’s degree in Spanish Literature specializing in second-language teaching. With Señorita Mariana’s experience with both communication and education, she can teach the Spanish language, share the Latin culture, and create exciting experiences for BYDS students. In her free time, she loves to travel, spend time with family, and get together with friends. “I am really excited about this academic year and the amazing memories we are going to make.”
