Faculty Spotlight Week 14

Harriet Bormaster, Learning Specialist

How long have you taught at BYDS?

I’ve taught at BYDS for 33 years. My favorite thing about BYDS (other than the amazing people I work with, the friendly, caring community & environment, & the supportive families) is seeing the beautiful, contagious smiles on the children’s faces every day! I adore watching their growth while learning new skills. Challenging students to be the best they can be is my passion.  BYDS has truly been my home away from home these past 33 years!!

What are you “free” reading right now?

Outside of school, I love spending time with my family & reading. I’ve just finished reading The Seven Sisters Series ( 5 books ) by Lucinda Riley  I look forward to reading more of her books.

Have you ever met someone famous?

My husband (Ronnie) & I had drinks with Leslie Uggams & Dionne Warwick in Las Vegas on our “Honeymoon”!!  We also met Steve Lawrence & Eddie Gorme’ during that same trip.  Years later we met & talked to Shirley MacLaine in Las Vegas. Las Vegas has been our lucky place to meet famous people!!

Heather Purcell, Assistant Pre-K Teacher

Where did you go to college, and what attracted you to the education field?

I went to the University of Texas at Austin. While there I studied business. I knew that I wanted to be on the people-side of things, so Marketing was my major. I’ve always loved kids and felt very natural being with them. It wasn’t until much later in life that I decided to switch to Education.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I don’t know that I would give my younger self much advice. Maybe to not stress about certain things so much? But you have to live through things and experience them yourself to really know.

Where would you travel to for one month?

Right now, my answer would be Spain. My family had an exciting trip planned for last summer. It got cancelled because of Covid, like everyone else’s plans. Maybe next year. Also, I’m always happy on some Caribbean beach!

What is your favorite kind of candy, and why?

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are unarguably the best candy. The sweet chocolate. The salty peanut butter. The texture. I don’t buy them, but I always used to steal them from my daughters’ Halloween candy.

Nailah Scott, Assistant CDO Teacher

What is your favorite thing about BYDS?

My favorite thing about BYDS is the sense of community I feel. I truly believe that everyone here loves and wants the best for the children and each other.

What are your hobbies/interests (other than making BYDS great)?

I’m a reader and an avid series watcher. I have just about every streaming app. When I’m not working here I am working on my business. I have a small brand that I’d love to expand, so that’s my favorite thing to do.

What superhero talent would you most like to have?

I think I am a superhero. I have always had this sort of calming personality and with that I’ve been able to step into situations and help others calm down as well. I’ve used that “power” to help in my career. Other than that, I’d love to have unbreakable bones.

What is your favorite kind of candy, and why?

I don’t really eat candy. I’m more of a salty snacker. I love pickles.
