Faculty Spotlight Week 13

Hannah Kirsner

What are your hobbies/interests (other than making BYDS great)?

My interests/hobbies are traveling (especially visiting my family in Holland), food (eating, creating, finding new places), and exploring the great city of Houston! I love small towns, being outdoors, and frequent the small town of Wimberley, TX when I am able to!

Have you ever met someone famous?

I met Woody Harrelson in Bellaire at the Little Woodrow’s in April of 2013. He was here for fundraising and he was really nice, talked to our group for a while, took pictures, and just hung out there for a few hours.

If you had to live in a either a library or a zoo for the rest of your life, which would you choose and why?

I would choose to live in a zoo for the rest of my life because I LOVE animals, especially Otters! You’ll find me next to them! 😀

What is your favorite treat?

Dark Chocolate! Between 70-80% is perfect! Love sweet treats from Three Brothers Bakery & The Bagel Shop Bakery!

Alexandra Newman, School Counselor

What are you most proud of this year in regard to your work at BYDS?

I am most proud of being able to provide social emotional learning to our students during covid in person. I know it has been a challenging year and making sure our students’ social emotional needs are addressed is extremely important. I am also glad to be back to finish the school year after being on maternity leave to continue to instill life skills to our students.

Where did you go to college, and what attracted you to the education field?

I went to Simmons College in Boston, MA. I received my master’s in education and knew I wanted to work with kids in some capacity. After student teaching, I realized I wanted to pursue a master’s in school counseling to focus on the social emotional needs of kids which has always been a passion of mine. I noticed if kids’ social emotional needs are disrupted it can affect their academic performance and realized I wanted to help bridge that gap and teach these skills that they don’t necessarily get in their classes.

What can you cook to perfection? Are you willing to share the recipe?

I don’t know if it’s cooked to perfection, but during quarantine I jumped on the baking banana bread bandwagon and think I have finally mastered that. Of course willing to share recipe — bake and enjoy and add chocolate chips for an extra treat 😊 https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/banana_bread/

Where would you travel to for one month?

If I could travel anywhere for a month it would be to Australia

Sherry Oliver, Lead Pre-K Teacher

What is your most memorable moment at BYDS so far?

My most memorable day had to be my 50th birthday.  My class threw an amazing surprise party and my students made me cards and gifts.  It was truly a special day for me.  They were so excited.  I won’t ever forget that day.

How old were you when you decided to become a teacher?

I was probably around 5 when I decided I wanted to be a teacher.  I loved playing with all my dad’s office supplies and teaching my little brother, so I thought it would be a fun job.

Where would you travel to for one month?

If I could travel for a month I would go to the Hill Country.

What is your favorite meal? (to eat, that is, not cook)

My food to eat is chips, salsa and queso.  If it’s on the menu I will order it anywhere I go.
