BYDS Gives Back

Tzadakah (charity) and Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) are not just words spoken during T’Filah (our morning exercises) or written on a chalkboard in Hebrew or Judaic classes.

Rather they are key concepts that are crucial to the Jewish people and integrated into the teaching environment at BYDS every day. Our students learn how those mitzvot (good deeds) contribute to the making of good citizens, strong Jews, and compassionate human beings. At BYDS, we are not only teaching scholars; we are creating Mensches.

Throughout each school year, the kids participate in several activities related to these mitzvot. A few examples are:

  • Annual Tzedakah Drive in which the students collect money each week and decide which charity to allocate it
  • Mishloach Manot, the Purim Mitzvah of sending portions of food to one another and gifts to the poor
  • Volunteer outings at Jewish Family Service and Seven Acres
  • Various collection drives (toys, food, backpacks, etc.) held throughout the year to help families and children less fortunate

The idea of “giving back” is strongly stressed in our school and is a significant tool we use to help our students achieve emotional maturity in an increasingly complex and interconnected world, one in which we all depend on each other. Our students also learn by example as their parents, grandparents, and other friends of the school engage in Tzadakah and Tikkun Olam, both at home and through the school.

In this way, BYDS thinks global and acts local.

My favorite subject is Judaic Studies. Look – I’ve got friends at every school around this area, but the way we do Judaics makes Beth Yeshurun perfect for me.
The teachers I’ve had have all made learning fun…They simplify the more complicated concepts and make them easier to understand.
